It’s natural for parents to be protective. When you hear conflicting information on the internet, it’s difficult to know if elective ultrasounds are safe.
Fortunately, ultrasound technology has been used safely for decades. Elective ultrasounds can be perfectly safe when a fully trained sonographer uses the technology correctly.
Here’s what you need to know.
Do 3D/4D ultrasounds use stronger radiation than 2D?
Ultrasounds do not use radiation at all. Ultrasound uses sound waves. Those sound waves are then processed by computer software to help you get an image of your baby.
3D/4D probes emit the same gentle soundwaves as standard 2D medical probes. The 3D effect is created by better software, not by different probes. We don’t “turn up the power” on your baby.
Do keepsake sessions expose the baby for too long?
Medical bodies like the FDA do warn against prolonged, unregulated exposure to ultrasound waves. A valid concern if the operator is untrained.
Our sessions are time capped so we stay well within safety limits. We follow the ALARA Principle: as low as reasonably achievable.
A 20-minute elective scan is generally considered comparable in exposure to a standard medical anomaly scan.
Does ultrasound hurt the baby’s ears?
Babies can likely hear little “whooshing” sounds when the ultrasound is in progress, but there’s no evidence it causes pain or hearing damage.
Fun fact: most babies sleep right through the session!
How does training help operators handle ultrasound machines better?
While anyone can buy a machine, not everyone knows how to use it safely. Untrained operators may not know how to monitor the machine’s energy output settings. But our team has 17+ years of experience.
Knowing how to get a clear image quickly prevents the need for excessive scanning. Experience helps our techs get the shot efficiently. Amateurs keep the wand on the belly for far too long as they try to figure it out.
