How to Prepare for Your 3D/4D Ultrasound

Table Of Contents

Want your 3D/4D ultrasound experience to go as smoothly as possible?

Taking these simple steps can help you remain comfortable throughout the process while increasing the chances you’ll get incredible results to share with your family members.

Be sure to take these simple steps.

    Fill Your Bladder

We know! This is awkward to talk about, and probably sounds a little physically uncomfortable too. But a full bladder will help push your intestines out of the way so the ultrasound waves can reach your baby.

You’ll get crisper images and better image quality.

Your bladder doesn’t need to be so full that you spend the entire ultrasound worried about an accident. Just try to empty your bladder 90 minutes before appointment time, then drink 8 oz. of water.

This will have the bonus effect of helping you stay hydrated, too! Hydration increases and clarifies the amniotic fluid, which will also help to ensure good results.

    Wear Comfortable Clothes

Pull out the maternity sweats and a favorite soft tee. In a 2-piece outfit like this you won’t have to remove any clothes, and you’ll have plenty of room to move. It’ll be easy for you to get comfy—and you should feel comfy through every part of the 3D/4D experience.

The more relaxed you are the better the results will be. We don’t recommend throwing on PJs or anything, but we do recommend feeling good in what you’re wearing.

    Eat a Light Meal

Your baby is like anyone. Your baby likes to eat!

Eating a light meal about 45 minutes before your appointment can help wake up the baby.

    Consider:

    • Fruit
    • Hardboiled Eggs
    • Granola
    • Yogurt
    • Whole Grain Crackers
    • Nuts

Avoid heavy or greasy foods. This isn’t the time to order your favorite pizza or chow down on your favorite hamburger.

    Bring Your Partner

If possible, bring your partner to your 3D/4D ultrasound. It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to bond with the baby too. You’ll be able to see the baby’s facial features. You’ll get to see your baby moving around.

Actually seeing your baby can make impending parenthood feel real for the first time. Helping partners have that experience early can mean inspiring a more supportive, more involved parent even before the baby arrives.

Plus, you might want a hand to hold and someone there to share the joy with you!
