How to Take Great 3D/4D Ultrasound Photos

Table Of Contents

    Smile for the camera, baby!

Or rather, get ready for the camera, Mom. Because while the sonographer is in charge of your 3D/4D ultrasound and while there are many factors beyond your control, there are things you can do to help them capture those incredible, clear keepsake photos and videos.

Here are some practical tips that you can use.

    Factors You Can’t Control

Before we get into what you can control, let’s get into what you can’t. There are a few factors that can make a big difference in the quality and number of images you receive.

    1. The baby’s position. A baby that’s facing inward, has their hands and feet in front of their face, or who is smooshed up next to the placenta can make it difficult to get clear images. We always hope baby cooperates!
    2. Amniotic fluid levels. Low fluid can obscure views.
    3. Sonographer skill. All you can really do here is choose a provider you trust (like, we hope, Little Loves)!

    Factors You Can Control

Here are a few factors you can control!

    1. Get it done at the right time. The sweet spot for the baby’s gestational age is 26-32 weeks.
    2. Drink plenty of water! While you can’t directly control your amniotic fluid levels, you can increase your chances of good ones by staying hydrated.
    3. Eat a light snack 30-40 minutes before your appointment. A little sugar boost might just help baby become a little more active (and it’ll make you happier, too).
    4. Wear comfortable clothing with easy access to your abdomen. Sweats are fine!
    5. Manage expectations. The baby might not cooperate right away, but stress won’t help! Stay calm and relaxed. This is your time.
    6. Work with your sonographer! Your sonographer might ask you to change positions, walk around briefly, or even jiggle your belly gently. All of this can help wake baby up and get them moving!
    7. Cherish the live view. Even if all you see is a bit of peek-a-boo baby, you’re getting a lovely bonding experience with your future child.

    Share & Enjoy!

We recommend backing up any digital files and saving physical copies somewhere safe, like in a baby book. Don’t forget to introduce these hyper-realistic images to grandparents, siblings, and best friends!
