Understanding Diagnostic vs. Non-Diagnostic Ultrasounds

Table Of Contents

Think an ultrasound is an ultrasound?

In reality, different types of ultrasounds serve very different purposes. The diagnostic scan that you receive at the doctor’s office is meant to detect potential health problems with your baby.

You might feel a sense of relief when you find out everything’s ok, but it’s not really a bonding moment.

By contrast, a non-diagnostic ultrasound offers you a fun family portrait session with your baby before they’re even born.

Both scans use the same technology, but the goals, timing, and outcomes are all totally different.

    What is a diagnostic ultrasound?

A diagnostic ultrasound is a medical exam ordered by an OB-GYN. Sonographers will certainly give you a blurry picture of your baby after, but they’re also busy looking for specific danger signs.

    They’re studying:

    • The heart
    • The brain
    • The kidneys
    • Placental placement
    • Fluid levels
    • Measurements
    • Blood flow

These ultrasounds are performed by registered diagnostic medical sonographers. They are then taken and interpreted by a Radiologist or Periantologist. These professionals then send a formal medical report to your doctor.

What is an elective or non-diagnostic ultrasound?

An elective ultrasound is a chance to bond with your baby! The focus is on creating an emotional connection between the baby and the parents.

The focus? Creating the best possible image of your baby. Our sonographers are focused on:

    • Capturing facial features
    • Capturing smiles, yawns, and blinks
    • Gender reveals

The environment is also completely different. Elective studios offer comfortable seating for family members and friends, or even come to do the imaging in the comfort of your own home.

We then give you keepsake photos, videos, and even heartbeat recordings to help you celebrate the occasion.

What happens if the elective sonographer notices something unusual?

They will not diagnose. They may quietly suggest you make a follow-up appointment with your physician if they’re truly concerned, or if you are. Remember, even diagnostic sonographers pass their images along to other professionals before any other determinations are made.

Why should you schedule both a diagnostic and non-diagnostic ultrasound?

Elective scans are not a replacement for diagnostic scans and should not be treated as such. Every Little Loves 3D/4D client should remain under the care of their physician.

Instead, you should get both so you get the best of both worlds: peace of mind about your child’s health, and a chance to bask in the joy of the new baby to come.

Both use the same safe, non-ionizing ultrasound technology, and both help you make the most of your pregnancy experience.
