Choosing a 3D/4D ultrasound for a twin birth offers a double dose of excitement, but the parents of twins face some unique logistics.Â
Since “space” is at a premium during a multi-baby pregnancy, timing and preparation are key if you want to get those heart melting shots of your little dynamic duo.Â
When should you schedule a 3D/4D ultrasound for twins?
Twin ultrasounds should happen a little earlier than singleton ultrasounds. The target for singletons is 28 to 32 weeks, but the target for twins is 24 to 26 weeks.Â
At the 24 week stage, both babies have developed enough facial fat to look “filled out.” But by the 27th week, there might not be enough amniotic fluid in the womb to allow them to move well.Â
By the 27th week, twins often “layer” or “tuck,” which makes it more difficult to get a clear profile of both faces. They also like to fling out arms or legs, blocking one another’s faces and generally making a great photo difficult.Â
How hard is it to get both twins into a 3D/4D shot?
When you have twice the cute, you get twice the personality. It’s common to have a “hiding” twin and a “show-off” twin even if you time your ultrasound correctly. It’s important to manage expectations! For example, it will be tough to get both faces in the frame at once.Â
Fortunately, experience matters when you’re imaging twins. The experienced sonographers at Little Loves 3D/4D use different angles to capture as much of both twins as is possible. The position of each baby is the ultimate boss, but we do have a few tricks up our sleeves!Â
And even if you don’t get perfect photos, you’ll get something equally beautiful. You’ll get the chance to watch the twins interacting with one another long before they’re born. That’s a special gift that is hard to replace, no matter what shots you get.Â
How can Moms get the best shots possible at their 3D/4D ultrasound?
While there’s little you can do to control the imaging, there’s a lot you can do to increase your odds.
- Stay hydrated by drinking 2 liters of water a day 5-7 days before the appointment.
- Drink a glass of juice 20 minutes before the scan. This helps wake up the babies!
- Wear a two-piece, comfy outfit so you can stay comfy while we navigate your bigger baby bump.
