What to Expect During Your 3D/4D Ultrasound

Table Of Contents

3D/4D ultrasounds aren’t just a medical process. They’re an emotional experience that can help you bond with your baby. Here at Little Loves 3D/4D, we can even perform them in the comfort of your own home.

But as a medical process, they can cause some expectant Moms a little bit of anxiety.

We want you to feel as calm and as comfortable as possible when you’re getting to know your new baby! That’s why we’ve put together this list of what to expect.

    3D? 4D? 2D?

What are all these acronyms? What’s going on?

A 2D ultrasound is the most traditional ultrasound. It’s primarily used for medical diagnostics.

Meanwhile, 3D/4D ultrasounds are often elective. They’re used for bonding and keepsake purposes. This is because a 2D ultrasound usually delivers enough detail to tell doctors what they need to know about your baby, but a 3D/4D ultrasound delivers more.

    A 3D ultrasound creates a photo-realistic image of your baby. A 4D creates real-time, moving video images.

How can I prepare for my 3D/4D appointment?

You can prepare for your 3D/4D appointment by drinking lots of water! Staying hydrated can help with amniotic fluid levels. We also recommend wearing comfortable clothing. It doesn’t hurt to have a light snack beforehand, too.

What happens during the 3D/4D appointment?

You’ll lie down in a clean, comfortable room. One of our technicians will then apply gel to your abdomen. Your sonographer will then move the transducer over your belly. There will be a screen in the room that will let you see real-time images! If your baby cooperates, you may even see yawning, thumb sucking, or stretching.

Of course, you may need to be patient. The baby’s position is key, and sometimes they have to be coaxed to move. That’s why a typical 3D/4D appointment takes a little longer than a 2D appointment. You can expect an appointment of roughly 30 to 45 minutes.

How can I have a great 3D/4D experience?

Try to relax! Consider bringing a loved one with you, like Dad. This is a fun experience for you and your family. Enjoy it!

You’ll receive copies of all of these images so you can share them with the extended family, too. Introducing a big brother or a big sister to the baby early, for example, can help promote sibling bonding.
